Why You Must Change Your AC & Furnace Filters
If you do not change the filter for your air conditioning and heating system every 2-3 months, you can expect major buildups of dust and other substances. These tiny particles will make their way into the air ducts and the rest of the HVAC system. This quickly becomes a problem. To maintain your home cooling or heating system, we highly recommend checking and changing the filters a few times per year.
MERV Filter Ratings
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) provides homeowners with a clear standard for filter effectiveness. The MERV filter rating, or the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value informs consumers of a filter’s ability to catch tiny particles in the air and prevent them from passing through to the rest of the HVAC system.
Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR)
Branded filters from 3M / Filtrete use a special rating called MPR. The Microparticle Performance Rating informs us of a filter’s effectiveness when it comes to trapping tiny particles in the air.
FPR - Filter Performance Rating
Similar to a MERV rating or MPR, the Filter Performance Rating tells us how effective a filter is at capturing tiny particles in the air. FPR is only used for filter products sold in Home Depot stores.
